The check

A developer was habited to playing golf on Fridays at The Golf Club.Sam's pride was invested in his 6 children, his beautiful Irish wife, and his membership at The Golf Club.

Sam had been negotiating on a large parcel of land. The deal was finally struck after, Sam said, "entirely too much conversation with a self important attorney" and a closing set up. Sam arrived for the closing. Reviewing the figures went well. He then took out his check book to pay for the real estate.

The seller's attorney objected to accepting Sam's personal check although it was well known that Sam had the wherewith all for any purchase he pleased. His large cash balances could easily be confirmed. The seller's lawyer insisted that only a cashier's check would do.

Sam retired from the table saying nothing, offended to the core, and met with a group of friends on Sunday afternoon to plot how to proceed. They left laughing.

The friends spent several days at every bank in town preparing to close the deal the following Friday. They had learned through the attorney's secretary that the lawyer had a plane to catch for an extended trip directly following the closing.

The friends arrived at the closing carrying large parcels. They explained nothing but began removing loose one dollar bills from the satchels , dumping the monies in a huge pile on the closing table.

"It's all there", they said .....leaving the seller's attorney the chore of counting all the monies to complete the transaction. He was still counting long after midnight.

In as much as he could not deposit the counted funds anywhere after 5:00pm on Friday, he was obliged to remain in Columbus, Ohio and to hire guards to watch over the funds until the banks opened again on Monday morning. A proper receipt could then be stamped and the transaction filed at the court house.

The friends didn't disturb Sam at the golf club at any time during the closing day. Sam won the round.
